Open Methodology And Caveats

Snapshot timestamp: -

The out-of-work package includes standard UC, child elements, housing support and Child Benefit. It does not include UC childcare support because that support is tied to being in paid work.

The in-work comparison estimates monthly take-home pay from annual gross pay, then applies the current 55% UC taper and work allowances from GOV.UK. Both partners’ wages count. Income Tax uses the region selected. Pension contributions, savings, other income, sanctions, disability additions and transitional protection are not modelled. This is a household comparison, not a complete entitlement check.

Official housing mode uses current Local Housing Allowance tables and bedroom-sharing rules. Single adults aged 35 or over use the one-bedroom rate. Enter child ages and sex, and override the bedroom allowance for an eligible exception. Enter actual rent to limit housing support to the rent paid.

The benefit cap applies to both scenarios unless the earnings threshold or an exemption applies. Declare other exemptions or a grace period using the checkbox. Childcare reimbursement requires eligible work or an exception and is excluded from the cap. The Child Benefit tax charge uses the higher earner’s estimated annual pay.
